On November 16 2006 Nikon released thier smallest ever entry level DSLR which is now 18 years old! Can this camera compete today with the latest offerings from Nikon? The short answear going spec for spec is no, BUT if we are talking about making quality images then 100 percent yes.
In this short blog I go over the specs, images it can produce and how it can still be very relevant in today's camera market especially with the current media platforms.
I have made a more in depth video on the Nikon D40 which you can watch here.
I purchased the Nikon D40 18 years ago and it was my first step into the DSLR market, my main reason for picking up this little gem was simply to document my daughter and son growing up and all of our family holidays and what a great camera it was for all those special moments.
Can 6.1 megapixels be enough in todays camera world.... YES it can, never have I ever been dispointed with the resolution from the Nikon D40 its always been more than enough, yes you cant crop much but really you dont need to if you capture the shot in camera. The image below was shot with the nikon D40 ( all of the iumages in this post are shot with the Nikon D40) and the 50mm 1.8 AFS lens.
It soon became more than just a happy snap camera, it led me on a journey into off camera lighting which opened up a whole new world in my photography.
Looking back this camera taught me so much and for a camera in todays market which I picked up for only £27 can do the same for anyone who wants to learn the amazing world of photography on a budget. I picked my camera up here.
Nikon D40 basic specs
6.1 mega pixels APSC DX format CCD Sensor
ISO range os 200-1600 bossted to 3200 in H1 mode
2.5 frames per second shooting
Max resolution 3008 x 2000
Optical viewfinder
2.5 inch lcd screen
F mount
So what can you expect from a camera with these limited specs? Well I have shot Weddings, sports, portraits and much more, now Iam not saying this is a professional camera because it isnt but what it is and what it is capable of is capturing all the images you want!
Now 2.5 frames per second is nothing compared to current cameras today but dont let that put you off as back then and going further back it was all about anticipating the shot a skill I would highly recomend you learning.
The Nikon D40 is a great camera which can produce stunning images and if you are on a budget and looking to get into photography then this camera will help you learn this amazing craft.
